One

One
faces the world alone
Two
faces the world together
Three
faces the world embracing
Four
who begin to look for more
at times
it is we forget
in grim despair
that one
is not the best way
to move forward
that we share
a common humanity
beyond
race or religion
where friends
and even strangers
become involved
to lighten the burden
of one
for the burden of one
is the burden
of us all

Very few burdens are heavy if everyone lifts. Sy Wise

Coming Through a Tunnel

Coming through a tunnel
one sees the light
disappear
at the entrance
with surrounding darkness
enveloping,
the movement continues
in darkness
or if we are lucky
in artificial light.
One trusts
that it is alright
Some purpose
carries us through
to the other side,
the light
of our darkened passageway
fades away
into the light of day.
Life presents us
with many such tunnels
where trust
is the foundation
of forward movement,
where another's work
leads us through
a seeming impasse,
where hope
couples with joy
with embracing light
at the end of the tunnel.
Our belief
and our faith
is slowly raised
in the mounting evidences
of a greater plan
more than any one man
could muster
for in all things
there is the indelible mark
of our creator

see me
let me in
give me a chance
hear me
ponder my words
give me a voice
touch me
for all around you
are my creations
touch them
with love
with kindness
and understanding
give me hands
seek me
in all you do
acknowledge me
with thanks
with good deeds
and generosity
give me heart
and I promise
you will see me
again and again

I felt as if I were walking with destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and this trial. Winston Churchill

Am I Any Different

Am I any different
than say five years ago?
or how about
yesterday?
or the day after losing a good job?
how about
after divorce?
or failing an exam?
am I any different
than the day
a fine job landed my way?
or I passed a hard exam
making an "A" score?
or having a child?
Did I change
when I made a poor decision?
or can I
count the best decisions
and let them stand?
or am I a sum total
of all that's gone before?
I don't know
I do know
I carry on
for better or worse
in sickness or in health
in poverty or wealth
I carry on
until I die
and I am told
that even then,
even then
Still am I
I think
the best part of life
is I believe,
I hope,
and I pray --
and with love
what an unbeatable combination
for with love
it all seems to matter

A man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them. Mark Twain

There is very little difference in people. But that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative. W. Clement Stone

Inner Sense of Rhythm

Inner sense of rhythm

Henry David Thoreau
comes to mind

A different beat
from a distant drummer

the drummer within
beckons each one of us
Most pretend not to hear it
Others drown it out
being busy
with life's chores --
the path we choose
each day of our lives
will bring the drums
closer
or farther away,
they always return
they are the compelling notions
in our brain
coming to the surface
reminding us
of a mission
branded within our souls
the uniting of soul & spirit
comes with its own dna
a hidden imprint
awaiting
our choice
to stand up & walk tall
to begin a journey
far beyond any we can recall
a fresh
and exciting
perspective
the drums keep calling us
no matter how far
we run away
the drums keep calling us
no matter how far
we go astray
the drums keep calling us

One should always act from one's inner sense of rhythm. Rosamond Lehmann

Potential

Potential
a word that comes to mind
at every crossroad in life
when we reconsider
life's choices
and choose again
a second round
everybody has them
our best competition
is ourselves
going forward
backward
or holding on
as if life
would be so kind
as to stop
progression.
No,
potential
is a dream
in progress,
fulfillment
carries on to a
second round
the race at best
is ourselves
deep inside,
the drive
like water over a dam
flows smoothly
with added potential,
the air recharges
the water,
we choose again
going forward
backward
or holding on --
Potential,
a word that comes to mind
at every crossroad in life

Julie

Julie
In my pausing
I have held onto you
Kissed you
Walked forward with you
and wondered
is this the right moment?
Are we meant for each other?
Despite a heavy load
on all sides
and no financial stability
I have gone forward
trying to be there
when I could be
and letting go
when I could not
I've tried to understand
our best sides
trying to be there
with what works
At one moment
of many such ponderings
I prayed in my heart
to know
and decided, yes, to continue
dating you, courting you
and the answer I got
was clear
a warmth in my heart
so in my pausing
I have held onto you
Kissed you
Walked forward with you

Live and work with integrity, and everything else is a piece of cake. Pat Salvatore

I Stopped Along the Way

I stopped along the way
and talked, for just a while
to someone I'd not known
very well or very long

In the time that past
we shared
discovering a tune
musical notes floating around us

What is this new song?
I wondered
Silently, afterward
I sat musing about our humanity

Don't know how long it's been
Since I've stopped
to talk so long
I should do it more often

People do not know
at the time it happens
what influence
will be felt

All I can say is it's
transforming
to be human
to see other sides of the coin

Certainly, we are all attached
some way, somehow
despite our differences
our disconnectedness

Perhaps we are here
to reconnect
where we have been
pulled apart

If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Looking

Looking
Not standing still
Moving forward
Actively becoming
OOPS I said the being word
On the journey
In the process
searching
Looking for something
until it is found
then developed
and integrated
the journey
never ends
it is the excitement
the punch
in my life
Will I ever be content
to be still?
yes
daily
there is a core of me
at the center
that distills
by values
which I hold
as a guide
it brings the clarity
despite the change
around me
nothing new
it has led me through
many journeys
and will continue
till my journey
is through

Opportunity

Opportunity
is all around me
seize the moment
take the reins
ride long & hard
while it lasts
Like all other things
in life
it comes & goes
whether you take it
or not
Opportunity
learn to recognize
the signs
A need fulfilled
as simple
as drinking water
Opportunity
watch for it
be vigilant
be ready to act
put your heart 'n soul
into it
Opportunity
is a dream come true
something
you must do
step out of
your comfort zone
Opportunity
awaits

The reason so many people never get anywhere in life is because when opportunity knocks, they are out in the backyard looking for four-leaf clovers. Walter P. Chrysler

Looking Back at Small Ideas

Looking back
who created the paper clip?
who made
the first bread machine?
How did we store things
without folders
pentaflex holders
and file cabinets?
There was a time
before our time
when ten common things
of our day
did not exist
cars
watches
cell phones
skate boards
roller blades
calculators
computers
credit cards
radios
televisions
this list could be
hundreds more
if we only knew
what sparks
the human spirit
to discover more
to be more
to redefine life as it is
to life as it will be
imagine
not only looking back
but looking forward
what is your ten things?

One of the major factors which differentiates creative people from lesser creative people is that creative people pay attention to their small ideas. Roger von Oech

It Matters Not

It matters not
where you go
or what you do
the battle of life
is within
For in all you do
wherever you go
there is more than enough
Life overflows
with opportunity
to grow
to make your mark
Life inspires one
by its awesome
connectedness
Follow it
Prove it
Zestfully chase it
Peruse it
and it will come back
to you
many fold
Become the expert
of your journey
Life is waiting
to speak to you
and me
All of us
need All of us
in the simple
journey of life

Music, Daily

Daily
I talk to my guitar
and it gives me back more
daily
I review favorite melodies
and other musical thoughts
grace my path
daily
I lift my voice in song
each day a new song
embraces the life around me
capturing the imagination
daily
music rings free
like the wind in the trees
and the sun and moon
music
a simple expression
grows more and more
by expression
daily
use it or lose it
whether I beat a drum
or play the bass
or take the harmonica
out for a ride
daily
it is music
daily

Character

Character
we all know
a character
when we see one
distinctive
unique
awkwardly delightful
humbly insightful
character is born
with each step
along the road of life
somewhere inside
there is a compass
a pathfinder
character shows life
with purpose
vigor and vim
reaching out
touching other lives
finding a harmony within
building a harmony
without

Character is formed, not by laws, commands, and decrees, but by quiet influence, unconscious suggestion and personal guidance. Marion L. Burton

Where I Go

Where I go
no man has gone before
I can make this journey
bright
or I can make it
dull
at some point
I must pick myself up
and go, go, go
no one else
will do it for me
and long before
any praises sing
or the doors open
along the road
there I must be
struggling untold hours
to become
someone
true
with clarity of sight
a vision
for what can not be seen
acting
forming the foundation
placing the pillars
putting up the archways
laying down a roof
and setting in place
stones
to reinforce a vision
with clarity of sight
stones
no one else
will put there for me
stones

The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses -- behind the lines, in the gym and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights. Muhammad Ali

Daily

daily
life is about
many things
some we choose
some are chosen for us
control as we might
life goes on,
from great minds
we learn
great truths,
from weak minds
we learn
great truths,
perhaps in the end
we will join
in a single line
and rejoice in the growth
or the stupidity
of all mankind
The great freedom of choice
The responsibility of choice
I wonder
at the great comedians
of our day
and hope
that their views
will soften the blows
of misfortune
and spread the hope
of lessons learned
hope anew
a choice review
every morning
of our life.

Little minds attain and are subdued by misfortunes but great minds rise above them. Washington Irving

You Were Born

You were born
at a time
when man has conquered
nature about him
with a societal reach
that obscures
the very nature
it conquered.
What a shame
we no longer know
how to adjust
to seasons
or to enjoy
the wonderful flow
of nature
about us --
where food
is a trip
to a grocery store
and water
is on tap
hot or cold.
Would I return us
to earlier eras
of struggle?
No, I think mankind
was born to overcome
and conquer nature
and to realized
all over again
that conquer as we must
nature still is in control
even the smallest of life's creatures
have a role
and a place
on earth
may our demands
in time
include the very nature
we seek so hard
to conquer.

Time

Time
where did it go today?
I made a list
and got busy
quite a twist
how time
got away
so I threw in lemon
and a bit of honey
and moved on
to another day
I did what I could
I let go of the rest
I could not carry it
anyway
And who is there?
who knows me well enough?
to say what I did
was not enough?
these short days
of intense happenstance
radiate
they seed the days ahead
time needs the rain
of ideas
our directions in life
don't come fully explored
notions give sway
and excitement begins
time itself is exploration
involving all our senses
with movement & sound
listen with your heart
go forward with your mind
always allow fresh rain
to strengthen & season
your resolve
time
where did it go today?
time
it slowly went away!

Flying

Flying
unbelievable
soaring with the clouds
where up and down
moves the horizon
the emotion
of the moment
rekindles
with each flight
somehow it
feels natural
as if
man were born to fly
the sky
being an artificial limit
we place behind us
it is here
in the heights
that the laws
of the universe
get real -- real quick
an engine sputters
a lever binds
the gasoline runs out
and the laws
of the universe
take over
real quick
seeing the trees
or a telephone wire
handling a quick breeze
or going by another flyer
all events
have new meaning
altitude
requires discipline,
quick thinking,
and a view
with the end in mind
on the other hand
so it is
with all of life
